How Will I Teach You?
For students who are further along in their prep OR need targeted help in one area, a personalized version of the below process will be created.
For students who are starting from scratch OR need overall help with the ENTIRE test, my 4-stage process will take you to your personal BEST score in the LEAST possible number of tutoring sessions:
STAGE 1: Diagnostics & Planning
Prior to our first lesson, you will complete a diagnostic GRE. During that first lesson, we will then identify your areas of weakness in the Quantitative section.
We will then chart a personalized roadmap for you by prioritizing those areas of content that are most important for YOU to reach your target score and arranging them in the optimum sequence.
We will also establish a study routine for you to follow OUTSIDE of our sessions that will involve:
Studying Vocabulary for when we finally get to working on the Verbal section.
Keeping an Error Log of questions to review at a later time.
Writing and Submitting Essays to prepare yourself for the GRE Essay.
STAGE 2: Learning & Review
In this stage of the process, you will maintain that study routine to build your Vocabulary & Essay Writing Skills while we cover your areas of weakness in the Quantitative section.
To cover the material in the fewest sessions possible, you will work on content modules outside of class and we will use our weekly sessions to target what you couldn’t figure out yourself.
You will also be:
Doing Targeted Homework to reinforce the most recent areas we have covered in our sessions.
Doing Cumulative Homework to retain and integrate ALL the material we have ever covered.
Writing Essays and Getting Feedback to improve your Writing Score.
Creating Flashcards to retain & review all Math concepts.
STAGE 3: Strategy & Application
Once you have acquired the KNOWLEDGE – both Vocabulary and Math Content – we will look at section-specific strategies to help you apply it under timed conditions.
You will learn how to:
ID the type of information you need on ANY Reading Comprehension Question AND know how to find it.
Analyze the Structure of an Argument in Logical Reasoning prompts & use the analysis to answer the question(s) attached.
Use the structure of a sentence to successfully anticipate the correct answers for the Sentence Completion Questions.
Use the format of Quantitative Comparison questions to leverage your reasoning skills to answer the questions more swiftly.
STAGE 4: Training & Practice
The fourth and final stage will see you taking full-length practice tests and reviewing them with me in our sessions.
This is the stage in which you will practice applying everything you’ve learned under actual exam conditions, receiving constant feedback to hone your performance.
You will develop speed and stamina during this phase.
In between practice tests and review sessions, you will also (a) work from the Error Log you kept and (b) do Targeted Practice on areas that still need work.
This stage will continue into the week of your exam date to help you finish strong. You and I will constantly assess where you stand in terms of readiness and decide when to schedule your test to ensure that you are at your most prepared on this crucial day!
How does my tutoring compare to that of other services?
Their Approach…
(Kaplan, Princeton Review, Magoosh, PrepScholar, Manhattan Prep, etc.)
Will try to prepare you for Reading Comprehension tasks by:
Making you practice on their own 3rd party Reading Comprehension questions, which differ from real GRE Reading questions in ways that teach bad habits, instill a false mindset on how the test works, and create confusion because:
3rd-party-generated answer choices deliberately contain very ambiguous differences, causing you to debate between them endlessly.
The rationale for their correct answer often depends on a “tricky” (and very debatable) reading of the text, making it impossible to learn from your mistake and improve.
Giving overly general, “common sense” advice for most of the major question types.
Teaching you to make an overly-detailed outline or “map” of the passage, despite the fact that doing so is often impractical due to (a) time limits, (b) the overabundance of detail in the passages, & (c) how it steals time and attention away from focusing on macro-level aspects of the passage, such as the Main Idea & Primary Purpose, which are far more important to answering the questions.
Our Approach
Will prepare you for the Reading Comprehension tasks by:
Using NOTHING BUT REAL GRE Reading Comprehension Passages & Questions from my personal library of retired GRE exams from ETS, thus enabling me to provide you with the most accurate practice possible AND teach you how to:
Make fine distinctions between what the Reading Comprehension texts say and what the answer choices say in order to eliminate all but one answer choice every time!
Recognize PRECISELY what makes a right answer “right” and a wrong answer “wrong” so that you never again have to debate over which one feels subjectively “best”!
Giving you a concrete and immediately applicable strategy for EACH of the major question types!
Greatly simplifying your approach to reading the passages by teaching you that there are only 4 types of GRE Reading passage, each of which has its own distinct type of Main Idea, which is the key to unlocking over half the questions!
Their Approach…
(Kaplan, Princeton Review, Magoosh, PrepScholar, Manhattan Prep, etc.)
Will try to prepare you for the Sentence Completion tasks by:
Focusing more on the memorization of increasingly obscure vocabulary.
Teaching you to come up with a “fill-in” word, thereby:
inviting subjectivity into your thought process
leaving you vulnerable to the trap answers set by the test-maker which are designed to anticipate the most common biases and assumptions people will make when coming up with their own word.
Our Approach
Will prepare you for the Sentence Completion tasks by:
Showing you that – while learning a lot of vocabulary IS important – these questions are far more about your ability to detect and exploit increasingly subtle tone, context, and syntax clues in the sentences (rather than just memorize more obscure words)!
Training you to FIND AND USE the same verbal markers the test-makers used to settle upon THEIR answer when writing the Sentence Completion questions, thereby giving you a much more precise way of finding the correct answer than by just using a “fill-in” word!
Their Approach…
(Kaplan, Princeton Review, Magoosh, PrepScholar, Manhattan Prep, etc.)
Will try to prepare you for the Quant Section using a method that:
Focuses too much on how to solve stereotypical problems using a fixed set of steps, leaving you unprepared for questions that require varying the steps or even combining approaches (like many questions on the real GRE do).
Does NOT encourage the use of subtle Quantitative Reasoning (like the real GRE does), but instead requires the use of:
Heavy amounts of Computation & Increasingly Complicated Algebra
Large amounts of time spent plugging-in numbers & testing answer choices.
Our Approach
Will prepare you for the Quant Section by:
Focusing more on building SKILLS rather than memorizing question types and, more importantly, training you to recognize when to use those skills, thereby giving you greater adaptability and control over the sheer variety of real GRE Quant questions!
Teaching a simple 3-step attack for ALL Quant Comp questions that teaches you how to use Quantitative Reasoning to:
GREATLY REDUCE the amount of computation, algebra, or number-testing involved OR
BYPASS such work altogether by figuring out the question at the level of concepts only!
Their Approach…
(Kaplan, Princeton Review, Magoosh, PrepScholar, Manhattan Prep, etc.)
Will reteach you the same, overly basic 5-paragraph template you learned in school that:
Can be tough to finish within time limits.
Encourages over-simplistic “yes/no” responses to complex issues, thus producing responses that are not particularly thoughtful or mature.
Doesn’t solve the common problem of not having enough things to say, tempting students to pad their response or just repeat themselves.
Our Approach
Will teach you a unique Essay template that will:
Be far easier to complete under the time limit!
Add nuance, insight, and sophistication to your essay by helping you move beyond simple "yes/no" responses for any prompt!
Generate as much content as you need without repeating yourself or padding the essay!
Their Approach…
(Kaplan, Princeton Review, Magoosh, PrepScholar, Manhattan Prep, etc.)
Is time-consuming, typically requiring:
20 – 40 hours of instruction, if taking a LIVE course
40 – 140 hours of video-based and/or text-based content modules, if taking a self-paced course
60 – 180+ hours of instruction if using a hybrid model
10 – 15 hours worth of homework outside of instruction
4 – 6 months to complete (and sometimes even longer for working professionals).
Rarely achieves anything beyond a 5 - 8 point improvement to your composite GRE score
Our Approach
Is Super-efficient & Stream-lined, with many students finding that:
They can keep up with at least 80% of the homework, even when juggling their GRE prep with other courses, work, etc.
The material takes less time to cover thanks to the highly condensed style of instruction that relies:
More on crisp visuals & demos than long lectures
On using 1 tool for many jobs (instead of 10 tools for 10 jobs)
They attain significant improvements in 2 – 4 months, with 1 – 2 hours of tutoring on average per week!
Produces an average improvement of 9 – 20 points to composite GRE scores!
Does all of this sound too good to be true?
Don’t take my word for it – take theirs:
“Meeraj was always accommodating with my busy schedule throughout the school year. The personalized study schedule with test strategies, practice problems, and practice exams were point-on. Working with Meeraj to study for the GRE improved my composite score 22 points!”
-Emily B
“Meeraj is an excellent tutor! He provided me with the necessary skills to achieve a 338/340 on the GRE!”
- Joel Krim
“Meeraj was an amazing tutor! I went from 143Q to 153Q on the GRE in just a couple of months. He's a great teacher that thoroughly went through the basics with me and I really appreciated his extreme patience with me as someone without a natural predisposition to math. As an adult learner, his flexible schedule allowed me to work and study at my own pace. He's by far the best math tutor I've ever had and by the time our tutoring sessions ended I even started enjoying doing the Quant! I'd recommend him to anyone, of any age, trying to get better at standardized testing.”
-Bianca S
“Meeraj was an amazing tutor. He prepped me for the GREs in the 5 short weeks that I had. I originally took the test before finding him as a tutor and my scores were far below what I wanted. In 6 sessions he was able to help me bring my scores up 9 points in each section! After taking my GREs again I am very satisfied with my scores! He also have a bunch of strategies and hints that really helped me study!”
- Brooke
“Meeraj was knowledgable, helpful, and understanding. Our sessions kept me on track. I was able to increase my GRE from 155/154 to 161/158 thanks to Meeraj’s strategy ideas and our tutoring sessions. A 10 point increase in less than 2 months. Would definitely recommend.”
-Shelby
“Meeraj really knows what he is talking about when it comes to the GRE. He provided helpful resources for review and always explained concepts with useful visualizations and detailed notes. With his tutoring I improved my GRE score by 13 points overall. Totally recommend!”
-Gabriella
“Meeraj is an amazing tutor, extremely knowledgeable, and very patient! He helped me prepare for my GRE exam over the summer, giving me tips and tricks to vastly improve my score for all three sections! What makes Meeraj such a great tutor is that he is very patient and always willing to explain anything and everything, even if it was a simple math concept from high school that I probably should have remembered. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for help to study for the GRE/SAT/ACT etc. You are guaranteed to improve your score with his help!”
-Jasmin
“I had a pleasant experience with Meeraj on the GRE exam, and will recommend his services to others for the following reasons: A) Strategic - Meeraj followed a data driven approach to draw insights on what my weaknesses were. Through this he was able to craft a succinct game plan where the agenda for each lesson and homework targets were set B) Flexible - I had to take the exam over the festive period and Meeraj was flexible to accommodate my schedule in such a busy period C) Effective- My encounter with Meeraj was over a short period of time, in 5 lessons I was able to achieve a score improvement of 9 points on the GRE because of his guidance.”
-Tim
“Meeraj helped me prepare for the GRE's and without his strategies, planning, study tips, and coaching I would not have been able to increase my GRE scores for both quantitative and verbal parts of the test. I came to Meeraj with very little confidence on how to tackle such an important exam and with very limited time to prepare for my following exam. Through his coaching I was able to come out of 5 weeks of tutoring with more confidence and knowledge about how to pace myself and tackle certain problems. Without these GRE strategies I would not have been able to obtain the 5-7 point increase I needed to apply to the graduate school programs I intended on applying to for a Masters in Speech Pathology. With Meeraj's help, the process of applying to grad school has become less of a burden because of the GRE score requirement for most schools. Currently I am waiting to hear back from programs such as Montclair, Temple, Columbia, and Adelphi University and none of that would have been possible without out Meeraj's help!”
